Performance of Corn Hybrids with Contrasting Maturity in Northeastern Kansas

چکیده

Corn (Zea mays L.) hybrid selection is one of the most important agricultural management decisions made by farmers. Both genetic yield potential and adaptation to local environment vary widely across corn hybrids, have a direct impact on input costs. This study compared performance hybrids with contrasting comparative relative maturity (CRM, referring their growth cycle), evaluate differences in crop phenology, grain its components—grain number weight. The field experiment was conducted during 2022 growing season Manhattan, KS (U.S.), testing five commercial CRM under rainfed conditions. overall length (days) cycle all ranged from 92 120 days, 102 146 bu/a. variation mainly explained

Selecting Corn Hybrids

Corn is physiologically mature when kernels reach maximum dry weight and are safe from frost. All milky fluid disappears from the kernel, and the black layer, a dark layer of cells, forms near the tip of mature kernels. Most hybrids adapted to Wisconsin reach this stage when kernel moisture decreases to 30–32%, but it may not occur until moisture content decreases to 28% for some early hybrids....

Ranking Corn Silage Hybrids

Corn hybrids for silage vary in yield and several quality traits that affect farm profitability, which is the prime criterion on which hybrids should be ranked. The partial budget approach is the only way to rank corn hybrids for silage for individual farms according to their effects on farm profits. Partial budgets consider only those costs and returns that change in response to the corn hybri...
